Amazon India announces expansion of its fulfilment network in Tamil Nadu; almost doubles its storage capacity this year

Expands fulfilment infrastructure to offer storage space of close to 4.4 million cubic feet to sellers in the State

Chennai, 12 August 2021: Amazon India, today, announced the expansion of its fulfilment infrastructure in Tamil Nadu with the launch of a new Fulfilment Centre (FC) and a specialized FC for large appliances and furniture in Coimbatore. Additionally the company will also quadruple the storage capacity of an existing FC in Chennai. With this significant investment, Amazon India will now have 6 FCs, and double its storage capacity in Tamil Nadu with close to 4.4 million cubic feet spread across a carpet area of more than 1 million square feet. All these buildings will be ready and operational ahead of the upcoming festive season to support more than 50,000 sellers in the State and generate thousands of direct and indirect work opportunities for locals.

The fulfilment centre was virtually inaugurated by Thiru M K Stalin, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu along with Prakash Dutta, VP –Customer Fulfilment Operations & Supply Chain, Amazon India, in the esteemed presence of Thiru Thangam Thennarasu Honorable Minister for Industries and Thiru. T. M. Anbarasan, Honorable Minister for Rural Industries, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. With this expansion, Amazon India will continue to provide a delightful experience to its customers and sellers ahead of the much-anticipated festive season.

The expansion in Tamil Nadu is a part of Amazon’s plans to increase its pan-India fulfilment network by close to 40% to provide a total storage capacity of 43 million cubic feet to its sellers, in 2021. Amazon has created one of the most advanced fulfilment networks and sellers in India have been benefitting from Amazon’s expertise in fulfilment, reliable nationwide delivery, and customer service. Of the 6 FCs in Tamil Nadu, two of them are specialized buildings and will house tens of thousands of products in the large appliances category consisting of air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines & TVs and a selection of products in furniture category. 

Buildings across Amazon India’s fulfillment network are designed with state-of-the art technology and efficient building systems that minimize energy use. The buildings have on-site and off-site solar panels which produce solar power and are designed to be net water zero with multiple initiatives such as rainwater collection tanks, recharge wells to replenish water into aquifers, sewage treatment plants and ultra-low water efficient fixtures. Fulfilment centres are also being designed to make these work places accessible to people with disability as we continue to hire diverse workforce to make our workplace more inclusive.

Amazon India’s Operations presence in Tamil Nadu includes:

  • 6 Fulfilment centres with close to 4.4 million cubic feet of storage space across Chennai and Coimbatore.
  • 2 Sort Centres with more than 40,000 square feet of sortation area across Chennai and Salem.
  • A strong delivery network with more than 120 Amazon owned and Delivery Service Partner stations in the State.
  • Hundreds of ‘I Have Space’ (IHS) stores in Tamil Nadu.
  • More than 50,000 sellers in Tamil Nadu.
  • Top categories include large appliances, consumer electronics, fashion, smartphones, and grocery.
